Would you like to play a sport but don't know which one you'd like
best? Here's a list of different sports and a description of how
they're played.
|
Gymnastics
Teams compete to see who's best at doing somersaults and back
flips, walking on a "balance beam" without falling off, jumping
over things, and doing all kinds of swings, twists and flips on
something that looks like a big gym set.
|
|
Soccer
Played on a big field. Two teams of 11 players each try to kick or
use any other part of the body — EXCEPT their hands and arms
— to knock the ball into the other team's goal.
|
|
Dancing
It isn't really a sport, but dancing is a fun and terrific way to
exercise. You can learn all types of dancing, from ballet and tap
dancing to hip hop and jazz. (Or, you can just pop in a favorite CD
and dance any way you like!)

|
Basketball
Played on a court between two teams of five players each. Each team
scores points by using their hands to throw the ball through the
other team's basket that's 10 feet above the court.
|
|
Tennis
Played on a court between two players. Each player uses a racquet
to hit the ball over a net to the other player's side of the court.
If a player hits the ball out of bounds or into the net, the other
player wins a point.
|
|
Football
Played on a field by two teams of 11 players each. Each team tries
to score points by moving the ball into the other team's "end zone"
or by kicking the ball through the other team's "goalpost."
|
|
Volleyball
Played on an indoor or outdoor court between two teams with
six players each. The teams use their hands to hit the ball
back and forth over a high net — not letting the ball
touch the ground. If the ball touches the ground on one
team's side, the other team wins a point.
|
|
Baseball and Softball
Played on a field with a bat and a ball by two teams, each
with nine players. Each team takes turns trying to hit the
ball with a bat, and who ever moves all the way around the
"bases" scores a "run."
|
|
Swimming
Two or more teams compete against each other in a large
swimming pool to see who's the fastest swimmer. There's a
"butterfly" race (swimming on your stomach and kicking with
your feet), a "backstroke" race (swimming on your back) and
other types of races.
