BMI Screening
An individual's Body Mass Index (BMI) is a computed number that indicates whether that person is underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese. A child's BMI is computed by entering his/her height, weight, age and gender into a BMI calculator.

The Sara Lee Center for Women's Health, in partnership with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system (and with parental consent), annually checks the BMI of all students in grades 1, 4, 7 and 9.

If a child's BMI indicates that he or she is at risk of being overweight or underweight, that information is sent home to the parents.
